Automation downfall: Disconnect to Reconnect

Uncategorized Mar 05, 2016

Automating social profiles to share content across multiple channels with a single post is often used to streamline distribution and save time. But sharing content with your community isn’t just about you. It’s about the value that your followers receive. If you have your Facebook Page connected to your Twitter account so that every post you share on Facebook is also shared on Twitter, you run the risk of your message getting cut off when it reaches 140 char…

Well, you get the point. If you’re using Twitter to promote your business and interact with customers, be real and show them that you care enough to craft a message just for them. Yes, it can be a challenge to fit your message, photo, link, etc. into 140 characters, but when you take the extra minute or three to write specifically for Twitter, your followers will notice. Your content and message gain credibility, and your engagement will likely grow as a result.

Another example of the downside of connecting your Facebook page to your Twitter account: You’ve probably seen tweets in your timeline that read, “I just posted a photo to Facebook.” or simply a Facebook link as per the image below. Sharing photos with your community is great, but these generic tweets offer no information about what the photo is, which makes it pretty unlikely that a user will make the effort to click on the link to see what has been shared. Even worse, if you upload an album of 20 photos to your Facebook page, guess what happens? Yep, your followers are subjected to 20 individual tweets, none of which have a description of the content (identity covered to protect the not-so-innocent).

One tweet inviting users to view the photos along with a link to the photo album might be a bit more enticing, don’t you think?

Are there examples of good uses for automation? Absolutely.  However, nothing beats engagement and building relationships online. It’s all about being present and earning the trust of your followers by providing the best user experience for your community. If two clicks are required just to read the message, it’s not going to get read by most people. Make it as easy as possible for your followers to view and understand your message and it’s a win-win.
